Obituary for David E. Vermilya

March 27th, 2017

David E. Vermilya, 68, of the Seneca River, Baldwinsville passed away suddenly after a short illness. Born in McGraw, NY to Robert and Margaret Vermilya and grew up attending the Manlius First Baptist Church

He is a graduate of F-M High School in 1966 and Hobart College in 1970. He took a position in March 7, 1971 at Town Shop Youth Center as a youth worker extraordinaire. He was consistently patient, respectful, and warm to all teens. He often said “it is an honor and privilege to serve the youth of Camillus.” He received numerous awards over his career. In 2000 he and Cheryl received the Syracuse Post Standard Achievement Award.

He enjoyed hiking, bird watching, kayaking and cross country skiing. He was a practical joker, photographer, lover of music and festivals, and his smoky bear, his Maine Coon buddy. Also a lover of homemade food which he never forgot to thank Cheryl for.

Survived by his wife Cheryl, college sweethearts who married in the college chapel in 1970; a sister Lois (Len) Weslowski; a niece Alana; a nephew Owen; and a sister-in-law L. Brooke Johnson.

At a later date a remembrance service will be announced.

Arrangements by B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, Camillus.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camillus Town Shop, 4600 W. Genesee St, Syracuse, NY 13219.

This is Dave and Cheryl’s friend Travis writing.

This is a hard time for all of us, but especially Cheryl. If you would like to do something to help during this sad time, please take a few minutes to send Cheryl some love in the form of a hand-written letter or card. All of us who know her well, know how much she loves receiving them. I know it would mean the world to her to find her mailbox flooded with messages of love and support.

In case you don’t have it, the Vermilya’s address is:

1076 Lynch Road,
Baldwinsville, NY 13027-9719

Cheryl wanted me to thank everyone who has already called, left voice messages, sent flowers and dropped off gifts. And although she is a “big thank-you card person” (her exact words), she can’t see herself being able to send everyone (past, present and near-future) thank you cards for a while. I told her not to worry about that, since our love for her and David needs no thanks.

Also, there will be an event held during the first or second weekend of May to remember and celebrate the life of David Vermilya, one of the most amazing and beautiful human beings that has ever walked among us. As more details of the coming event are solidified, you will all be notified through Dave’s and the Town Shop’s Facebook pages (as well as many other sources).

At this point the only details I’ve been told are that the event will have a cash-bar (meaning we will have to pay for our own drinks), and there will not be any food provided. Cheryl wanted to make sure everyone knew that so that they don’t come to the event hungry.

If you’re hurting, please take care of yourself and know you’re not alone. Dave’s influence has been profound. For all of us who spent our teen years with Dave and The Town Shop, we are all his kids. Reach out to one another, gather with friends and loved ones, provide and accept support, be kind to those you know and those you do not know, squeeze every bit of love out of life that you can, and spread the warmth and light that Dave brought into the lives of all of us who knew him.
